I’m K. Michael Dory, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. I specialize in relationships. Internal relationships (relationship with self) and external relationships (ex. Intimate, familial, friendships, work, etc.) I have worked with Individuals who want to work on confidence, self-esteem, sex-addiction, love-addiction, substance abuse, eating disorders, religious trauma, and race related issues. I have helped couples work on communication, creating a safe space for one another, enhancing and building better intimacy (physical and emotional), and allowing a space for the relationship to heal.
How we relate to ourselves and how we relate to others (intimate partners, family members, friends, co-workers, etc.) plays an integral role in how we experience life. You may want to have more confidence and higher self-esteem but find yourself stuck in negative thought and behavior patterns. Perhaps you have a partner and you have found it hard to communicate and grow with one another because of a fear of being hurt or appearing vulnerable. Perhaps you’d like to start a deep and meaningful relationship with someone but despite your efforts, you’re still left feeling disappointed and alone. It may be that you have gone through a breakup and want to move on but there is a part of you that is making it very hard to do so.
Whether you are an individual looking to explore and deepen the relationship with yourself so that you can gain a better sense of self-leadership or you’re a couple looking to build better communication, enhance intimacy, and work through relationship issues; therapy have positive and life-changing impact. My approach to therapy is incredibly collaborative and person-centered. You will find yourself in a safe space to explore and discover the different parts of yourself that have been holding you back from living life in the way you truly desire. We will move forward at your pace, and I will be here with you every step of the way. My goal is to create an environment where clients are empowered to create the change they desire.
Unfortunately, in our society mental health appears to have a stigma attached to it, especially for men. While I work with all genders, race and ethnicities, I have specialized in working with men of various ages, from teens to middle aged, on the different issues that men face in a space where they can feel safe to be open and honest about their feelings. While men generally are less likely to seek therapy, African American men are even less likely to do so, yet are often the people who could most benefit from therapy. As an African American man, I bring a perspective and understanding that is especially conducive inn my therapeutic approach. While my therapeutic work is eclectic, using concepts from therapy modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and hypnotherapy, I primarily work from an Internal Family Systems (IFS) Lens. The goal of IFS is to unburden and heal the wounded parts of the Self to help create a more healthy, trusted and harmonious internal way of being.
Currently, I am a Registered Associate Clinical Social Worker working at Reconnect. I am being supervised by Jennie Ehrlich Williams, LCSW #25738
